The Spirit of the Ridge Beam

Seongju is the senior guardian deity of the traditional Korean house, believed to reside specifically in the jongdaengbo, the main ridge beam running along the top of a traditional timber-framed home, a structural choice that reflects the beam's practical importance as the piece holding the whole roof structure together and, by extension, Seongju's role as guardian of the household's overall stability and prosperity.

Korean housebuilding custom traditionally marked the raising of this main beam with a specific ritual, sangnyangsik, at which the date and sometimes a blessing were inscribed directly on the beam itself and offerings made to invite Seongju to take up residence in the newly built or newly beamed structure, treating the god's presence as something actively established through correct ritual at construction rather than simply assumed. Within the wider Korean gasin household pantheon that also includes Jowang at the hearth and other spirits assigned to specific parts of the home, Seongju is generally regarded as the most senior figure, presiding over the house as a whole rather than one specific room or function.
