The separating funnel is one of the youngest instruments in this whole category, and its youth is exactly why it belongs here: it is the clearest case of a laboratory tool built after alchemy had already given way to chemistry as a distinct discipline. German chemical literature of the 1820s carries the earliest clear descriptions, with one contemporary textbook from 1831 describing an oval glass vessel with a bottle-like neck, a glass stopper, and a narrow drainage tube under the German name Scheidetrichter, essentially the modern design already in place. Its development is not traceable to a single inventor; historians of laboratory glassware describe it as the end result of slow, incremental refinement by working chemists rather than one documented breakthrough, evolving from simpler decanting tools into the standardized stopcocked funnel of the nineteenth century. It found immediate and lasting use in extraction, separating an acid from water, purifying an ether layer, or isolating one component of a mixture by shaking it with a second solvent, procedures that quickly became routine across nineteenth-century chemistry. The separating funnel needed essentially no further redesign after that point: it remains, under the same name and the same stopcocked pear shape, one of the most commonly used pieces of glassware on a chemistry bench today.
