A Doctrine Worth Leaving Vadtal Over
This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.
The split that produced BAPS turned on a specific theological claim, not on personality or politics alone. Shastriji Maharaj held that Swaminarayan, worshipped by the wider Sampraday as Purushottam, the supreme divine, could only be properly understood and reached through Akshar, the ideal devotee and eternal abode, a role he identified with the guru Gunatitanand Swami and with the unbroken line of gurus descending from him. Mainstream Swaminarayan diocesan authority at Vadtal and Ahmedabad, organized around temple administration by acharyas descended from Swaminarayan's own family, rejected this Akshar-Purushottam framework as an unwarranted elevation of a guru to near-equal standing with God. Rather than continue arguing the point from inside an institution that would not accept it, Shastriji Maharaj left with a handful of fellow ascetics and around 150 lay devotees and built an alternative institutional home where the doctrine could be practiced and taught without compromise, consecrating murtis of both Akshar and Purushottam together in one central shrine, a first, and a doctrinal statement made in architecture as much as in word.
