Training has traditionally run through direct apprenticeship, a young shilpi learning by working alongside an established master for years before being trusted with the most important carving, and this master apprentice model persists today in stone carving centres such as Mahabalipuram alongside newer institutional training programmes. Shilpis remain active and in demand wherever new temples are built, and their continued employment on both restoration of ancient temples and construction of new ones means the talamana proportional canon that governs their work is not merely an archive of historical technique but an actively applied standard on live construction sites in the present. A shilpi's reputation within the trade rests heavily on the precision of small, easily overlooked details, the exact curve of a hand gesture or the correct number of ornamental elements on a crown, since these details are exactly what a knowledgeable patron or fellow craftsman will check first.Cross-Tradition ConnectionsArticle OnShilpi, Religious Roles & Titles Well-attested Source Divinity Atlas Long-Form Articles, First Editiontier 1SourcesDivinity Atlas Long-Form Articles, First Editiontier 1Comments (0)No comments yet.
