Spare's Cultus and Its Chaos Magic Afterlife
Austin Osman Spare, a London artist who exhibited at the Royal Academy as a teenager before turning toward an increasingly personal and unconventional occult practice, developed sigilization as part of what he called Zos Kia Cultus, a system built around his own theory of a primal, atavistic force he termed Kia and the artist's own body and unconscious as the vehicle for accessing it, a highly individual cosmology quite different from the structured ceremonial magic of contemporaries such as the Golden Dawn, which Spare had brief early contact with and largely rejected in favour of his own method.
Spare's work remained a marginal, largely self-published interest for decades after his death in 1956 until Peter J. Carroll and the Illuminates of Thanatos, later organised as the Illuminates of Thanateros, took up sigil technique in the late 1970s as the founding practice of chaos magic, a movement whose defining claim is that belief itself is a tool to be adopted and discarded as needed for a working's purpose rather than a fixed commitment to any one cosmology, correspondence system or pantheon, which is precisely what let chaos magicians retain Spare's sigil method while discarding the older systems of planetary and elemental correspondence that traditional ceremonial magic had always built its symbolism from. Sigilization's appeal to this later movement lay exactly in that portability: a sigil requires no inherited system of correspondence to construct or charge, only a stated intent and a personal method of abstraction, which made it the most exportable single technique chaos magic inherited from any earlier occultist, more so than any of Spare's own more idiosyncratic theoretical writing about Kia itself.
