The Method That Made Athens Uncomfortable

Socrates left no writings of his own, so everything known about his method comes from students who each shaped it to their own purposes. What survives consistently across Plato's dialogues and Xenophon's memoirs is a distinctive practice, later called the elenchus or Socratic method, in which he approached someone reputed to be wise, usually a politician, poet, or craftsman, and asked them to define a term central to their claimed expertise, such as courage, piety, or justice. He would then test the definition through further questions until it collapsed under its own contradictions, leaving both parties aware that the original confidence in the answer had been unearned. Socrates presented this as a service rather than an attack, comparing himself in the Theaetetus to a midwife who delivers other people's ideas rather than his own. He connected the practice to a report that the Delphic oracle had called him the wisest of the Greeks, which he took not as a claim to knowledge but as confirmation that true wisdom begins with recognizing one's own ignorance. The method produced no positive doctrine on its own, which is part of why ancient and modern readers disagree sharply about what, if anything, Socrates himself believed, as opposed to what Plato later placed in his mouth. What is not disputed is the method's afterlife, it shaped the dialogue form Plato built an entire school around and remains a recognizable teaching technique in ethics and law classrooms today.
