A Life Sold at Her Own Speaking Engagements

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Sojourner Truth dictated her own life story to Olive Gilbert, published in 1850 as The Narrative of Sojourner Truth, which she sold at her own speaking engagements to support herself and her ministry directly, rather than depending on a publisher's royalties or outside patronage to fund her continued travel and preaching. That arrangement, an autobiography sold in person at the same events where its author was also speaking, tied the book's own circulation directly to her ongoing evangelism rather than treating the two as separate undertakings.

As a widely known evangelist who grew into one of the era's most prominent Black abolitionist and women's rights speakers, Sojourner Truth used her own life, dictated rather than self-written since she had never learned to read or write, as the primary evidence behind everything she argued for on freedom and moral reform. The Narrative's continued printing and reading today, more than a century and a half after Olive Gilbert first took it down, is itself a direct extension of the same self-supporting speaking and publishing model Truth built during her own lifetime.
