Samu, Practice as Realization Beyond the Cushion

Because Soto teaching holds that realization is not a future state practice earns but the character of practice itself, the school extended shikantaza's logic outward into ordinary monastic work, a principle usually named samu, so that cooking, cleaning and manual labor performed in a training monastery are treated as full practice rather than chores that make time for the real practice of sitting. Dogen wrote a separate set of instructions for the monastery cook explicitly to make this point: preparing meals with full attention is not a lesser task assigned to those not yet ready for the meditation hall, it carries the same shusho ichinyo claim the sitting cushion carries. Scholars of medieval Japanese Buddhism read this move as Dogen's practical answer to the original enlightenment doctrine debated across the Tendai school of his own training background, in which awakening could be affirmed as already present without any activity actually changing, a position Jacqueline Stone's study of medieval Tendai calls a live and contested current in the Buddhism Dogen inherited before founding his own school. Soto's insistence that the manner of ordinary activity itself carries realization, rather than only sitting alone, is the tradition's way of keeping practice and realization inseparable in daily life and not only on the cushion, since a doctrine that realization equals practice has nowhere to stand if only one activity in a monk's day counts as practice.
