Shikantaza Against the Koan Curriculum

Shikantaza is most easily located by what a Zen student following it does not do, and the clearest contrast on record is with the koan curriculum that the Rinzai teacher Hakuin systematized centuries after Dogen. Where a koan practitioner works a single assigned case, such as the sound of one hand, toward a moment of breakthrough a teacher then tests and confirms, a Soto shikantaza practitioner is instructed to hold no object and pursue no answer at all, since Dogen's own writing frames practice and realization as identical rather than as a path leading to a separate goal, a doctrine the tradition names shusho ichinyo. Historians of the two schools' formation, including Heinrich Dumoulin's history of Japanese Zen, describe the divergence as reaching back past both founders into differing readings of Chan practice in Song China, one favoring a gradual, object free settling into awareness and the other a concentrated, goal directed struggle with a single question. The two methods are not simply the same meditation dressed in different instructions; a Rinzai teacher measures a student's koan work against a defined checkpoint, while shikantaza has structurally no checkpoint to reach, only the ongoing act of sitting, part of why the two schools have kept separate training halls and separate teacher certifications for eight centuries rather than converging on shared technique.
