The Soul Urge Challenge is the challenge number drawn from the Soul Urge, the total of the vowels of the full name, which numerologists read as the inmost desire, what the self most deeply wants. Its challenge is the absolute difference within those vowel totals, reduced, and it names the friction inside that desire, the conflict, in the numerological reading, between what one part of the self longs for and what another resists, the obstacle a person meets in wanting what they want. It is the most inward of the challenge numbers, set within the most inward of the core numbers.
The vowel-only reading behind the Soul Urge is often traced specifically to Cheiro's 1926 Book of Numbers, which distinguished a name's vowel and consonant totals before Balliett's later successors turned the vowel figure into a core number and, still later, into a challenge number of its own by taking the difference within it; Florence Campbell's 1931 Your Days Are Numbered and Juno Jordan's 1965 book both carried the distinction forward into the standard modern chart. Not every modern numerologist reads a name's vowels and consonants separately at all: Dan Millman's widely read 1993 book The Life You Were Born to Live builds its system around the single Life Path number drawn from the birth date, without any vowel-only Soul Urge figure or the challenge derived from it, a reminder that this apparatus is a particular later elaboration rather than a feature of modern numerology as such.
