The Soul Urge Number

The Soul Urge, also called the Heart's Desire, is calculated from the vowels of the full birth name, converted by the Pythagorean letter-to-number chart and reduced. The reasoning behind using the vowels is that they are the sounded breath at the core of a name, the part felt rather than seen, so the number they yield is read as the inner motivation, the deep want and the longing that drives a person beneath outward behaviour, what the soul desires as against what it shows. It is paired with the Personality number, which is taken from the consonants and read as the outward self.

The distinction of vowels and consonants makes the method wholly dependent on the spelling of the name in the Latin alphabet. Like the rest of the system it belongs to the twentieth-century American numerology of Balliett and Jordan, called Pythagorean by convention rather than by any historical descent from Pythagoras.
