A Codified Prayer Still in Daily Use

Unlike several other prayers catalogued in this atlas whose original context or precise wording remains uncertain or lost, this prayer survives in Kardec's own clearly dated and published nineteenth-century French text, giving Spiritist practitioners direct, unmediated access to its original wording without the layers of manuscript transmission, translation uncertainty or archaeological recovery that complicate access to most ancient prayers discussed elsewhere in this atlas.

Spiritism today claims millions of adherents, particularly in Brazil, where Kardecist centers use this and related prayers regularly in both personal devotion and organized group sessions, and the prayer's continued active, essentially unchanged use across more than a century and a half since its original codification reflects the stability that a clearly authored and consistently published text can provide compared to traditions relying on oral transmission or fragmentary archaeological survival. Its emphasis on guidance from a specific guardian spirit rather than a general petition to the divine also distinguishes ordinary Spiritist personal devotion from the more group-oriented mediumship prayers, such as the prayer for the beginning of a meeting catalogued separately in this atlas, used specifically within organized Spiritist sessions.
