The Unresolved Dispute Between the Cat and the Monkey

Whether surrender is a concession suited only to those incapable of sustaining devotional yoga, or is instead the superior path open to anyone regardless of capacity, has never been settled within the Sri Vaishnava community, and the Encyclopedia of Hinduism records that the dispute eventually split the tradition into two schools commonly distinguished by a pair of animal analogies, the northern school likening the soul's role in surrender to a baby monkey that must cling to its mother by its own effort as she carries it, and the southern school likening it to a kitten carried entirely by its mother cat, contributing nothing itself to the process.
