Prapatti as a Complete Path
The Sri Vaishnava tradition teaches prapatti, complete surrender to God, as a means of liberation sufficient in itself, offered to those who cannot sustain the long and demanding discipline of bhakti yoga, devotional practice pursued over years or lifetimes through structured meditation, ritual and moral effort. The Theology of Ramanuja describes prapatti as consisting essentially in an act of entrusting oneself entirely to God's protection, accompanied by the abandonment of any reliance on one's own effort as the operative cause of liberation, God alone doing the work that effort would otherwise have to accomplish across a much longer path. Encyclopedia of Indian Philosophies, Volume III notes that this teaching answers a real pastoral concern within the tradition, that not every aspirant possesses the capacity, circumstances or lifespan needed to complete the harder discipline, and prapatti is presented as a genuine alternative route to the same goal rather than a lesser consolation prize for those who could not manage the real path, its sufficiency resting on God's own promise to protect anyone who surrenders in this way rather than on any merit accumulated by the one surrendering.
