Shadow Theatre as Preaching

The traditions attached to his name are specific. He is said to have redesigned the wayang kulit puppets into their stylised present form so that they would not be images of the human figure; to have composed particular stories in the repertoire, including one in which the sacred heirloom sought by the hero turns out to be the Islamic confession of faith; to have introduced the sekaten gamelan played at the mosque during the celebration of the Prophet's birthday, admission to which was the recitation of that confession; and to have written songs still sung in Javanese ritual.

Every one of these attributions comes from sources much later than the events. The babad literature that carries them was composed in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries at the courts of Surakarta and Yogyakarta, which had their own interest in showing that Javanese court culture and Islam were one thing. Scholars of Javanese music treat the wali-and-gamelan story as a charter myth explaining an existing arrangement rather than as a record of how it came about.

None of that makes the tradition unimportant. What is documented is that this account of how Java became Muslim, by absorption rather than replacement, has been the dominant Javanese self-understanding for centuries, and that the tomb at Kadilangu receives a steady flow of pilgrims. The atlas records the figure the tradition holds, and marks plainly where the historical record runs out.
