A Dog Turns Out to Be the Final Test

Svargarohana Parva, the Book of the Ascent to Heaven, closes the entire eighteen-book epic with Yudhishthira reaching the gate of heaven still accompanied by the stray dog that had silently followed him and his fallen companions the whole way up the mountain, only to be told he may enter but the dog may not, since animals are not permitted; Yudhishthira refuses outright to abandon a creature who has been loyal to him, even at the cost of forfeiting heaven himself, at which point the dog reveals itself to be the god Dharma, Yudhishthira's own divine father in some tellings, testing his son's compassion one final time even after a lifetime of tests, and Yudhishthira is welcomed in for passing it. A further, harsher trial follows: Yudhishthira is shown a vision of his brothers and Draupadi suffering in a grim hell-realm while, by contrast, Duryodhana and the Kaurava dead appear seated in comfort and honor, a deliberately disorienting reversal the gods explain was staged as one last test of Yudhishthira's resolve and his willingness to remain with his family even in suffering rather than accept comfort alone, after which the illusion dissolves and he is reunited with his brothers, Draupadi, and even, in a final act of reconciliation, with Duryodhana and the Kaurava dead, all now at peace together beyond the reach of the earthly war that divided them.
