A Name Without a Life Attached

Almost nothing is recorded about Svatmarama beyond the book that carries his name. He wrote, or compiled, the Hatha Yoga Pradipika in the early fifteenth century, and inside the text itself he traces the lineage of its teachings back to Matsyendranath, the founder credited by the Natha yogi tradition with carrying hatha yoga's techniques into the historical record. Beyond that single claimed line of transmission, the text offers no date, no patron, no place and no other biographical detail, and no independent record outside the text fills the gap. Even his name may be more a description than a birth name: Svatmarama breaks into sva, one's own, and atmarama, one who delights or rejoices in the self, a phrase suited to a yogi's title as readily as to a person's given name. Scholars working on the text's history, among them James Mallinson, whose ongoing critical edition project has assembled and compared more than two hundred manuscripts, have narrowed the likely date of composition to around 1400 CE, chiefly from the manuscript record itself: the oldest surviving copy dates to 1496, close enough behind the text's own claims to make a much later date for the original unlikely. Nothing in that manuscript record identifies Svatmarama further. What survives of him is the book itself, a compiler's voice drawing older material into the single manual that carried his name forward, while the man behind it did not survive in any other record.
