Incwala, a Kingship Ceremony With a Closed Core

Incwala runs across several days each December and is sometimes loosely described as a first fruits ceremony, but the ritual it centers on is the kingship itself rather than the harvest. Every Swazi may take part in its public stages, and the ceremony's climax draws wide public participation, songs and dances performed in the open before the nation. What happens around the king during the ceremony's more secluded stages is a different matter. The king's period of ritual seclusion and the medicines prepared and administered as part of strengthening him for the year ahead are treated by the tradition as closed to outsiders, content this atlas records the existence and general shape of without describing its content or procedure. Swazi traditional religion's own restricted tradition record names that boundary directly. What the ceremony is understood to accomplish, the public renewal of the tie between king, ancestors and nation, is recorded here as openly as any other doctrine this atlas holds; what is withheld from outsiders during Incwala's more secluded rites is recorded only as existing and as closed, consistent with how this atlas treats every other living tradition's guarded content. Umhlanga, the reed dance performed each year by unmarried women, is a separate and more widely known public ceremony that stands alongside Incwala in the Swazi ritual calendar rather than forming part of it, and unlike Incwala it carries no closed royal stage of its own.
