What Outside Observers Recorded and Missed

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Most of what English-language scholarship knows about tapu was written down by missionaries, colonial officials and early ethnographers after European contact had already begun reshaping the societies they were describing, Hawaii's kapu system was formally abolished by its own chiefs in 1819, a year before missionaries arrived, and other island groups underwent their own disruption on their own timelines. Handy's 1927 synthesis, like most of the foundational Western scholarship on Polynesian religion, is a secondhand record built from informants, earlier travellers' accounts and comparison across island groups rather than an inside description in a practitioner's own terms, and colonial administrations in several territories treated tapu observance as an obstacle to be legislated against rather than a system to be understood. What that leaves the historical record uncertain about is proportion as much as fact, how central a given restriction actually was to daily life, or whether an outside observer's account reflects one community's practice generalized too broadly. Contemporary Pacific scholarship and Indigenous-led research increasingly correct that imbalance, but a comparative Polynesia-wide account, this entry included, is still working from a record shaped disproportionately by outsiders.
