Temple of Psychick Youth and the Illuminates of Thanateros, already catalogued in this atlas, both emerged within a few years of each other in Britain, the Illuminates founded in 1978 and TOPY in 1981, spanning the late 1970s into the early 1980s, both drew on the same broad chaos magic current taking shape at the time, and both rejected significant parts of the older ceremonial magic tradition they grew out of. Beyond that shared starting point, the two developed in noticeably different directions. The Illuminates of Thanateros, founded by Peter Carroll and Ray Sherwin, built something closer to a systematised technical approach, treating belief itself as a tool to be adopted and discarded as needed and developing a structured body of magical technique meant to be tested and refined. TOPY, growing out of P-Orridge's work in music and performance art with Throbbing Gristle, leaned further toward art, ritualised sound and radical experimentation with personal identity, treating magical practice as continuous with cultural and artistic production rather than as a separate technical discipline.
The difference is partly a difference in the founders' own backgrounds, Carroll trained in the more systematic end of ceremonial magic before breaking from it, P-Orridge coming from experimental music and performance art with no comparable formal magical training to react against. It is also a reminder that "chaos magic" was never one unified movement with a single doctrine, but a loose label covering several independently developed responses to the same perceived exhaustion of older, rigidly hierarchical occult orders, responses that shared a rejection of fixed belief more than they shared any single positive programme for what should replace it.
