A Foundation's Scale, Read From Its Own Public Filing

The John Templeton Foundation is an active philanthropic foundation headquartered in West Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, and remains one of the largest funders of the academic study of religion and science anywhere in the world. As a private foundation under United States tax law it is required to file an annual Form 990-PF with the Internal Revenue Service, a public regulatory filing disclosing its revenue, expenses, assets and grants each year, so its finances are a matter of public record rather than private disclosure known only to its own board.

Its own most recently filed Form 990-PF, for the fiscal year ended 31 December 2024, reports total revenue of about 258.7 million dollars against total expenses of about 169.8 million dollars, and total assets of about 3.6 billion dollars. That scale has sustained, since the foundation's 1987 founding, ongoing grantmaking across subjects from cosmology and evolution to forgiveness, human purpose and the nature of ultimate reality, funding both academic research and public conversation on each at a level few comparable private foundations match.
