The Card and Its Imagery

The Ten of Cups completes the water suit's zodiacal run through Pisces, falling under Mars at the sign's third decan and carrying the Golden Dawn title Perfected Success, which the Thoth deck renders as Satiety, a title that reads fullness with rather more caution than Pamela Colman Smith's picture of a joyful family beneath a rainbow suggests.

Smith's composition, a couple with arms raised toward an arc of ten cups while two children dance beside their home, is among the most straightforwardly happy images in the entire deck, and it has no Marseille counterpart; that pattern's Ten of Cups is ten cups arranged in a decorative lattice, its meaning drawn from number and suit rather than from any domestic scene. The rainbow itself is one of relatively few weather or sky elements Smith reused with consistent meaning across the deck, appearing also, in modified form, behind the Six of Swords' calmer waters, and generally signals resolution or a passage completed rather than a beginning.

Mars is an unusual planet to find ruling a card of domestic contentment, and the Golden Dawn's own materials justify the placement mechanically, through the fixed Chaldean order of planets across the decans, rather than through any thematic fit between Mars and family life; several small cards carry similarly counterintuitive planetary rulers for the same structural reason. The Thoth deck keeps Satiety as its title and renders the ten cups as a lotus-form geometric design under a Piscean glyph, without figures, keeping some of the Golden Dawn title's implied wariness about fullness that has nowhere further to go.
