A Tradition That Argues With Itself About Its Own Discoveries

The concealed teaching claim does not exempt a text from scrutiny inside the tradition that produced it; if anything it makes scrutiny necessary, since anyone could in principle claim to have found something. Tulku Thondup's account describes traditional criteria Nyingma teachers have applied to a claimed discovery: whether the terton's own life and prior training fit the pattern expected of a genuine treasure revealer, whether recognized lamas independently confirm the find, and whether the teaching itself holds together doctrinally with what is already accepted rather than contradicting it. The nineteenth century Rime scholar Jamgon Kongtrul assembled the Rinchen Terdzo, a compiled collection gathering the treasure teachings judged authentic enough to preserve at scale, itself an act of editorial selection across centuries of claimed finds rather than a passive archive of everything anyone had ever announced. Outside the tradition, scholars including Janet Gyatso have studied terma less as a question of which finds are real and more as a literary and social phenomenon, asking how a community decides, generation after generation, which visionary claims become scripture and which do not, a question the tradition itself has never treated as automatically settled by the claim alone.
