The Best of Z.C.C. and the Church's Recorded Worship Songs

For most of its history the Zion Christian Church's worship music lived only in live performance, sung and played at Moria, at branch services across South Africa and beyond, passed on through choir and brass band membership rather than through recordings sold to a general audience. That changed with releases like The Best Of Z.C.C., a fourteen track digital compilation credited jointly to the church's own ZCC Male Choir, Z.C.C. Female Choir and ZCC Brass Band, distributed commercially on major streaming platforms.

The track list reads like a condensed version of the church's own liturgical calendar, hymns in Sesotho and Sepedi carrying titles such as Bana Ba Isiraele, Hosana and Jerusalem, alongside Sione Moria Thabakgone, a song that names the church's holy city of Moria outright. Hearing the collection is, in a small way, hearing the pilgrimage itself compressed into a recording, the same brass band figures and choral responses that a million pilgrims sing live each Easter, now catalogued with a release date, a track list and a rights holder credit rather than existing only in memory and in performance.

That act of recording and cataloguing matters beyond convenience. It gives outside listeners, and future scholars, a fixed and citable text for a worship tradition that Rafapa's own academic study treats as a living, evolving repertoire, the same kind of documentary anchor that a published hymnal or a scholarly transcription provides for an older tradition's music.
