The Diaspora Arm It Sends Abroad

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Sewa Bharati's reach extends beyond India through Sewa International, registered in the United States as a nonprofit in 2003 and described in independent reporting as Sewa Bharati's foreign service wing, built to engage the Indian diaspora in fundraising and volunteer service work outside India. The two organizations describe each other in reciprocal terms: Sewa International has called Sewa Bharati its local partner organization in India, while reporting on the RSS's structure identifies Sewa Bharati as Sewa International's parent organization. Sewa International itself traces its own roots to Sewa Bharati's 1989 founding and to the disaster response work Sewa Bharati's network carried out after the 1993 Latur earthquake in Maharashtra.

In the United States, Sewa International has built chapters across the country from its Sugar Land, Texas headquarters, centering its programming on disaster recovery support, family and child welfare, and community-based volunteer service, funded mainly by donor contributions rather than government grants. The relationship between the diaspora organization and its Indian parent network has itself drawn public attention: when Twitter's then chief executive personally donated several million dollars to Sewa International's disaster relief work in 2021, the gift was reported widely alongside its recipient's documented RSS affiliation, prompting scrutiny of how a Sangh-linked service network's international fundraising arm interacts with major donors and with the broader network of RSS-affiliated organizations it sits inside.
