European Fairy Tale Figures Reworked for Divination

The Faerytale Oracle is a forty four card deck Lucy Cavendish created with artwork by Jasmine Becket-Griffith, published by Blue Angel Publishing in 2016. Its guidebook reworks figures and motifs from European fairy tale tradition into an oracle for questions of initiation, mystery and personal destiny, a narrower cultural scope than the cross cultural folklore Cavendish drew on for Oracle of the Shapeshifters three years earlier, and structurally distinct from the paired light and shadow readings of her Oracle of Shadows and Light.

Jasmine Becket-Griffith's illustration again provides the deck's visual identity, continuing a working relationship between the two that runs across several of Cavendish's titles from this period. Reworking European fairy tale figures, material originally intended as children's or folk narrative rather than devotional or divinatory practice, into a reading system built for adult reflection on personal destiny is a common adaptive move within the modern oracle genre, treating an existing narrative tradition as raw symbolic material for a new use rather than reconstructing the storytelling tradition itself. The Faerytale Oracle is the most recent of Cavendish's Becket-Griffith illustrated decks among this group, following Oracle of Shadows and Light in 2012, Oracle of the Shapeshifters in 2013 and Les Vampires Oracle Cards in 2014.
