The Boasting and the Grudge in the Hall in Beowulf

The clearest surviving picture of what a sumbel actually looked like in practice, rather than in later reconstruction, comes from a scene inside Beowulf itself. When Beowulf arrives at Heorot he is challenged during the hall's drinking round by Unferth, who recalls an old boast of Beowulf's and claims it ended in failure, and Beowulf answers in the same public setting, correcting the account of what happened and adding a boast of his own about what he has come to do. The exchange has the shape modern Heathens draw from the Havamal and the sagas to describe the sumbel, a formal round in which speech carries consequence precisely because it is witnessed by the whole hall, but Beowulf shows the form functioning inside a narrative rather than being described from outside it as custom. Unferth's challenge is not treated as an insult requiring violence, it is treated as exactly the kind of testing a hall's drinking round exists to allow, something a reputation has to survive in public rather than merely claim in private. The scene is also evidence of how old the association between formal drinking, boasting and binding speech already was in the literature the modern movement draws on, since Beowulf itself is generally dated centuries before the Icelandic sagas usually cited alongside it.
