Shadow, and Jung's Actual Use of the Term

The twelve-archetype literature speaks constantly of each archetype's shadow, meaning its degraded or destructive expression. That is a narrower use than Jung's. For Jung the Shadow is a distinct archetype in its own right, the personification of everything the conscious personality refuses to recognise in itself, and its integration, the acknowledgment that what one condemns in others is also one's own, is a central and difficult stage of individuation. Jung held that the shadow is not simply the bad: it contains vitality and capacity that have been repressed along with the rest. Using the word to mean the downside of a marketing persona keeps the vocabulary and discards the content, and readers moving between the popular framework and Jung's own writing should expect the term to mean different things.

Jung's own account of the Shadow's place within individuation develops across several works, notably The Relations Between the Ego and the Unconscious (1928) and, in its fullest late form, Aion (1951), where he treats confronting the Shadow as the first and, in his view, comparatively accessible stage of a longer process that proceeds through the anima or animus toward the Self. He held that a person who refuses this confrontation tends instead to project the disowned material onto others, seeing in an enemy exactly what one will not see in oneself, a specific psychological mechanism considerably more precise than the popular use of "shadow" to mean simply a personality type's downside or weakness.
