The first line of The Receptive opens with an image of warning rather than event. Legge's translation gives the line as treading on hoarfrost, adding that the strong ice will come by and by. Hoarfrost itself is slight, a film of cold barely noticed underfoot, yet the line insists that it is not separate from the solid ice that follows but its first and smallest instance. Nothing dramatic has happened. The line asks only that the small sign be read correctly before it grows into what it foretells.
This is the lowest place of the lower trigram Kun, itself Earth doubled over Earth, the purest concentration of yin force the system allows. Where The Creative's first line held a dragon in reserve until its season, The Receptive's first line shows a process already begun, cold settling in by degrees rather than power waiting to be released. The two hexagrams open in mirrored postures, one a held potential, the other a quiet but real momentum.
Chinese commentary tradition reads the hoarfrost as any small, easily dismissed beginning, whether of decline, of a wrong-headed course, or simply of winter itself, that a careless eye passes over because it seems too minor to matter. The line's entire teaching is attentiveness to scale: what is small now is not therefore harmless, and the yielding, receptive quality that the hexagram as a whole commends becomes dangerous precisely when it is allowed to proceed unwatched from a first frost to a hardened winter.
