A Literary and Meditative School

The Shangqing revelations produced some of the most sophisticated literary and meditative material in the early Daoist canon, and the school built on them is generally regarded by scholars as marking a significant shift in Daoist religious practice toward interior visualization and mystical experience, in contrast to the more communal, confession and ritual-centered practice associated with the earlier Celestial Masters tradition. Later Shangqing masters developed the visionary material Yang Xi transmitted into an extensive system of meditation, breathing technique and internal alchemy aimed at cultivating transcendence within the practitioner's own body, treated as a microcosm of the celestial order the revelations described.

The school's texts also had a lasting literary influence beyond specifically religious practice, admired for their imagery and language by later Chinese poets and writers even outside strictly Daoist circles. Maoshan Shangqing Daoism became one of the most prestigious and influential schools of the medieval period, attracting patronage from successive imperial courts and shaping how later Daoist schools approached ritual and meditative practice.

Modern scholarship on Yang Xi's revelations has treated the surviving material as a genuine and remarkably well documented case study in how a new religious movement could form around one individual's claimed visionary experience, preserved in unusual detail because the Xu family kept Yang's original manuscripts and later Daoist compilers, including Tao Hongjing, went to considerable effort to authenticate and organize them.
