Consequence Woven into the Cosmos

The Threefold Law is a widely held teaching in modern Wicca, though Wiccans differ over whether the three is meant literally, as a precise multiplier, or as a way of stressing more loosely that consequences return amplified rather than in exact measure. Not every strand of the wider Pagan and witchcraft movement accepts the law at all; some traditions, including certain Feri and Reclaiming lineages that draw more directly on older folk-magic and ceremonial sources than on Gardnerian teaching, treat it as an unnecessary or overly moralizing addition rather than a core tenet, preferring to ground ethics more directly in the Rede or in situational judgment.

The law parallels, in a distinctively Wiccan idiom, the broader family of ideas about moral return found in many traditions, such as karma, while arising independently within twentieth-century Wicca rather than through any documented historical borrowing from Hindu or Buddhist sources. Together with the Rede it forms the core of Wiccan ethics for those traditions that hold it, grounding right conduct in the structure of a cosmos held to return one's actions upon oneself. Where the Rede asks a practitioner to weigh harm in advance, the Threefold Law adds a further, self-interested incentive to that weighing, since the consequences of an act are held to fall on the actor as surely as on anyone else affected by it.
