The Card and Its Imagery

The Three of Coins occupies the middle decan of Capricorn in the earth suit's zodiacal sequence, Mars ruling between Jupiter's expansive opening at the Two and the Sun's completion at the Four; Mars governing a scene of collaborative craftsmanship is another of Book T's less obvious pairings, and the Golden Dawn's materials read the placement as directed effort, force applied with discipline to a specific task rather than to conflict.

Pamela Colman Smith's picture, a sculptor working on a cathedral archway while a monk and an architect consult a plan beside him, is one of the deck's clearer images of skilled labor recognized by peers rather than by any authority above them; it has no equivalent in the Tarot de Marseille, whose Trois de Deniers is three coins arranged in a formal lattice, read by number and suit alone. The cathedral setting is notable among the earth suit's pip cards for placing craftsmanship inside a sacred building rather than in a field, workshop or market, and commentators generally read this as elevating skilled work itself to something close to devotion.

Waite renamed the older suit of coins Pentacles for his deck, and this card is frequently cited as one where the renaming matters interpretively, since a pentacle, a five-pointed sigil, carries ceremonial associations a plain coin does not, even though Smith's picture shows building materials rather than any magical implement. The Golden Dawn title, Material Works, and Crowley's shortened Work for the Thoth deck both keep the emphasis on labor itself; Harris renders the three coins as an interlocking geometric structure suggesting collaborative construction, without any sculptor, monk or architect.
