Gratitude for the Year Behind, Petition for the Year Ahead

The content of prayers offered to Tian Gong typically combines two elements in sequence, first expressing gratitude for blessings and protection already received over the preceding year, then requesting continued good fortune, health and protection for the year ahead, a backward-looking and forward-looking structure that mirrors the New Year timing at which the observance most prominently occurs.

Because Tian Gong is understood within the folk-religious hierarchy as presiding over matters of much broader scope than a single household's domestic affairs, prayers addressed to him tend toward more general requests for overall fortune and protection rather than the highly specific, personal concerns typically addressed to ancestors or to the Kitchen God, a difference in the scale and specificity of request that tracks the perceived scale of the deity's own jurisdiction. This practice continues actively among Chinese communities that maintain traditional folk-religious observance both within China and internationally, though its prominence varies considerably by region and by the degree to which a given family or community has continued traditional practices alongside other religious or secular commitments. The scale of observance, elaborate outdoor altar displays are far more visible and public than typical household ancestor veneration, also gives Tian Gong's worship a communal, sometimes neighborhood-wide visibility that more private domestic rites generally lack.
