Tian Liang is the sixth of the eight stars in the Tian Fu series, its chart position fixed at a set offset from Tian Fu's own calculated palace, following Tian Fu, Tai Yin, Tan Lang, Ju Men and Tian Xiang and preceding only Qi Sha and Po Jun in the series' established order. Its protective, longevity favouring reading marks a notable turn within the series' sequence just before its two final and considerably more forceful members, Qi Sha and Po Jun, a structural placement Ho Peng Yoke's account of the system does not read as deliberately symbolic, since the fourteen major stars' fixed order within each series reflects the underlying calculation formula rather than any narrative arrangement, but one later commentators within the tradition have nonetheless found suggestive, protection and shelter positioned immediately before the series' most disruptive stars take over.
Tian Liang's presence in the Parents Palace specifically is read favourably by the tradition, extending its elder, protective character directly to the reading of the native's own parents and, by extension in some lineages of practice, to superiors and mentors more generally, a natural fit for a star whose whole symbolism concerns bearing weight so that what stands beneath it does not have to.
