Religion and History in Timor-Leste

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Timor-Leste is the most overwhelmingly Catholic nation in Asia, over 97 per cent of the population by the 2022 census, a faith the Portuguese colonial administration planted from the sixteenth century onward and that the Catholic Church itself helped carry through the country's darkest period, the Indonesian occupation from 1975 to 1999, when the church was one of the few Timorese institutions Jakarta could not fully suppress and bishops such as Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo became internationally recognized voices against the violence.

Small Protestant, Muslim, Buddhist and Hindu minorities remain, most tracing to Indonesian-era migration or older trading contact. Independence itself is remembered on two dates, a unilateral declaration in November 1975 crushed within days by Indonesian invasion, and the actual restoration of sovereignty in May 2002 after a United Nations transitional administration, a split the country's national holidays still observe separately, and the church's wartime role in resisting Indonesian rule is what gives Catholicism its unusually central place in Timorese national identity today, beyond ordinary colonial inheritance.
