A Confidential Practice Tested in Open Court
Transcendental Meditation's insistence on confidentiality has been tested publicly at least twice in ways documented independently of the organization's own statements. In Malnak v. Yogi, a case decided by a federal district court in New Jersey in 1977 and affirmed on appeal in 1979, the court held that the Science of Creative Intelligence, the curriculum built around TM's techniques, could not be taught in New Jersey public schools because its content, including the ceremony surrounding mantra assignment, was religious in nature, a ruling that turned in part on testimony about the initiation ceremony's content and character rather than on the organization's own description of the practice as non religious. Separately, individuals and researchers outside the organization have at various points published material purporting to list the mantras TM assigns, generally tied to a practitioner's age at initiation, material this atlas does not reproduce, verify or rely on, since its accuracy relative to what the organization actually teaches cannot be independently confirmed from outside the organization's own confidential process.
The organization has consistently maintained that published lists of this kind are inaccurate or incomplete and has continued to present each mantra as individually selected for the practitioner, a claim outside researchers have not been able to test conclusively given the confidentiality the practice itself imposes on verification. The court case and the publication controversies are documented independently of that dispute and are recorded here as part of the practice's public history, without this atlas taking a position on whether any circulating list is accurate.
