An Educator Founds a Society and Dies in Prison for It

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Tsunesaburo Makiguchi founded Soka Kyoiku Gakkai, the Value Creating Education Society, a lay Nichiren Buddhist organization built around his own educational philosophy rather than around an existing religious institution. The society combined Makiguchi's convictions as an educator with his Nichiren Buddhist faith, a pairing that placed his religious commitments inside the professional organization he led rather than keeping the two separate.

During the Second World War, Makiguchi was imprisoned as a thought criminal for refusing to renounce his Nichiren Buddhist convictions and cooperate with wartime State Shinto orthodoxy, a documented refusal that cost him his freedom under a state that treated religious dissent from its own orthodoxy as a criminal matter. He died in prison, never released to see the war's end or the organization he founded survive it.

That Soka Kyoiku Gakkai's own founder died in wartime imprisonment for the same Nichiren Buddhist convictions the society was built to embody marks Makiguchi's death as a documented consequence of holding those convictions under a state that would not tolerate them, rather than as an incidental hardship separate from the religious commitment that defined his life's work.
