A Mentor and Disciple Bond Becomes a Film Decades Later

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Tsunesaburo Makiguchi's disciple Josei Toda was imprisoned alongside him during the Second World War, sharing his mentor's fate as a fellow thought criminal held for the same Nichiren Buddhist convictions. Where Makiguchi died in prison, Toda survived and went on to rebuild the organization his mentor had founded, carrying Makiguchi's own project forward through the one disciple who had shared his imprisonment rather than through any institutional continuity that survived on its own.

That mentor and disciple bond, tested by imprisonment and ended only by Makiguchi's death rather than by any falling out between the two men, became the dramatic center of the 1973 Toho film The Human Revolution, itself adapted from a novel of the same title by Daisaku Ikeda, Toda's own later disciple. A relationship three generations of leadership deep, Makiguchi to Toda to Ikeda, produced both the organization's survival and, decades afterward, its own cinematic account of how that survival happened.

The film's existence marks the Makiguchi and Toda relationship as significant enough within the tradition it shaped to be dramatized on screen nearly three decades after Makiguchi's death, a documented case of a wartime mentorship outliving both participants to become part of the movement's own told history.
