People Magazine Investigates: Cults built its first season around a simple structure: one episode, one group, and survivors telling their own story in their own words rather than a narrator telling it for them. The sixth episode, aired in July 2018, turned that structure on the Nuwaubian Nation of Moors, the movement Dwight York built from the late 1960s onward and which drew members with a shifting doctrine that mixed Black nationalist thought, ancient Egyptian imagery and claims about extraterrestrial origin.
The episode centers on two women who came to the group by very different roads. Ruby arrived as an adult, looking for answers to questions the movement seemed to offer with unusual confidence. Niki had no such choice: she was brought into the community as a child, so the beliefs she was taught were simply the world as she first knew it, not a system she chose to join. Both accounts converge on the same turn, a slow realization of what York's teaching actually asked of his followers and what happened to those who stayed.
What the episode does not attempt is a comprehensive history of the organization, its finances or its later criminal prosecution; other documentary treatments cover that ground. Its value here is narrower and more personal: a record, close to the source, of how two people from very different starting points arrived at the same conclusion about the same man.
