Tyr's Aett is the third and final group of eight runes making up the Elder Futhark, covering Tiwaz, Berkano, Ehwaz, Mannaz, Laguz, Ingwaz, Dagaz and Othala, the closing third of the twenty four rune row as the Kylver Stone's dividing marks lay it out. The group opens on Tiwaz, a rune whose name and shape both point to Tiw or Tyr, the Germanic war and law god attested independently in sources well beyond the runic evidence, including the weekday name Tuesday itself, so this is the one aett among the three whose common god naming rests on a genuinely direct link, the rune Tiwaz and the god Tiw sharing a name and, in the wider Germanic sources, a clear association, rather than an association assembled after the fact between a god and a rune that does not itself carry the god's name.
The group closes on Othala, ancestral land or inherited property, a rune widely read as concerning lineage, homeland and what passes from one generation to the next, giving this final aett a shape that runs from the god of law and rightful order at its opening to inheritance and settled belonging at its close. R. I. Page's survey of the runic evidence treats Tiwaz as one of the clearest cases in the whole futhark of a rune name preserving a genuine, independently attested divine name intact.
