Udyoga Parva, the Book of the Effort, narrates the tense diplomatic maneuvering after the exile ends, as the Pandavas, their thirteen years honorably completed, demand the return of their kingdom and are refused by Duryodhana, who declares he will not yield land "even enough to place a needle's point." Krishna travels personally to the Kaurava court as a last envoy for peace, offering a drastically reduced settlement, just five villages, one for each brother, to avert war entirely, a proposal Duryodhana rejects outright, even after Krishna reveals a fearsome divine form within the assembly hall in a failed attempt to overawe him into compliance. Both sides spend the rest of the book gathering allies and armies from across the wider Indian subcontinent, and the parva includes a striking episode in which Duryodhana and Arjuna approach Krishna on the same day seeking his support, and Krishna, asleep when they arrive, gives Arjuna, who had waited respectfully by his head, first choice between Krishna himself, unarmed, as an advisor, and Krishna's entire army; Arjuna chooses Krishna alone, a decision Duryodhana, delighted to receive the army instead, cannot see he has badly miscalculated.
