Taught Without a Living Teacher

Uwaysi transmission names a category of Sufi spiritual attainment in which a seeker is understood to receive genuine spiritual guidance and initiation without a normal, physically present teacher, either from a master who is already dead, or from a master living but never met in the flesh, the connection occurring instead through dream, vision or an inward spiritual bond.

The category takes its name from Uways al-Qarani, a figure from the generation of the Prophet Muhammad's companions who, according to tradition, never met the Prophet in person yet is held to have attained deep faith and spiritual insight through a bond that transcended ordinary physical contact, becoming the paradigmatic example later Sufi tradition points to whenever a seeker claims this unusual form of transmission. Because the normal chain of Sufi authority runs through a documented, person to person silsila, an initiatory lineage comparable in function to the Islamic ijazah, an Uwaysi claim represents a genuine departure from the ordinary system of credentialing, one that individual orders and scholars have regarded with varying degrees of acceptance. Historians of Sufism note that the same explanatory logic recurs whenever a tradition needs to account for a spiritually accomplished figure who cannot be fitted into its normal documented chain of teachers.
