Veerayatan is a Jain charitable organization founded in 1970 by the Jain sadhvi, later Acharya, Chandanaji, who became active in Bihar from 1973, running hospitals, eye care, schools and disaster relief without distinction of caste, religion or background, while naming its institutions for Jain figures such as the Tirthankar Mahavir and drawing its inspiration from Jain teachings on compassion. Chandanaji was awarded the Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian honors, in recognition of the organization's charitable work under her leadership, one of India's highest civilian honors and a recognition that placed a specifically religious charitable mission within the country's own secular honors system.
Veerayatan states that it serves without distinction of caste, religion or background, a stated commitment that runs through its own account of its founding and its subsequent decades of hospital, education and disaster relief work centered in Bihar, one of India's poorer states, extending the Jain teaching on compassion for all living beings from Chandanaji's own religious vocation into a sustained program of secular public service open to non-Jains as readily as to Jains themselves. The organization's practice of naming its hospitals and schools for Jain religious figures while serving a broader public without regard to faith reflects the same balance between explicit Jain identity and universal service that has marked its work since 1973.
