The Name as an Office, Not Only a Man

Vyasa is remembered as the single author who compiled the Vedas into their four collections and composed the Mahabharata, but the name itself means arranger or compiler, and Hindu tradition holds that a Vyasa arises in every cosmic age to organize sacred knowledge that has become scattered. The Puranas name a whole lineage of such figures, with Krishna Dvaipayana Vyasa credited for the present age.

Modern textual scholars read the Mahabharata as a work that grew over centuries, moving from a shorter core epic toward the sprawling collection of roughly one hundred thousand verses that survives today, with the Bhagavad Gita and much philosophical material likely added well after any single compiler could have worked alone. Whether a historical individual arranged an earlier core, or whether the name became a convenient way to authorize centuries of accumulated verse under one revered figure, is not something the manuscript record settles on its own. The tradition itself embeds this ambiguity: Vyasa appears as a character inside the epic he is said to have written, fathering the blind king Dhritarashtra and his brothers, and dictating the poem to the god Ganesha, who agreed to write only if Vyasa never paused, forcing him to compose difficult verses to buy himself thinking time. A text that describes its own author as also a character within it, and as his characters' own grandfather, is telling its audience something about how it wants its origin understood, and that telling is itself part of what scholarship studies.
