Centrality Rewarded at the Meal, and the Peace It Opens Into

The shared meal of food and wine occupies the single most favored station the hexagram has to offer, where a yang stroke stands correctly placed in an odd position at the center of the upper trigram, satisfying the classical doctrine of centrality and correctness together. Commentary treats a firm line centrally placed as close to an ideal reading regardless of the hexagram it appears in, and Hexagram 5 confirms the rule directly by making this its point of clearest good fortune.

When this line changes, Kan's central stroke becomes yielding, turning the upper trigram into Kun, the receptive earth, while Qian remains fixed below. The resulting hexagram is Number 11, Peace, earth over heaven, heaven's energy rising and earth's receptivity descending to meet it, traditionally read as one of the most auspicious figures in the entire sequence of sixty four. That the most rewarded line of Waiting transforms into the hexagram most associated with harmonious order is a direct continuation rather than a contrast: patience held firmly at the center of danger, once it changes, does not collapse into loss but opens into the fullest concord the system is able to picture. The pairing of firmness with centrality here is treated in later commentary as close to the single most fortunate configuration the whole system can produce, independent of any particular hexagram's subject matter, which is part of why this line's good fortune reads as more than local to Waiting alone.
