The sentence "dreaming of water means emotional turbulence" is the characteristic failure of the whole genre, and it fails in a specific and diagnosable way.
It has no attribution. It does not say who holds this view, when, or on what basis. Attribution is not a scholarly nicety here; it is the difference between a claim you can evaluate and one you cannot.
It contradicts the sources it implicitly invokes. Popular dream material gestures at antiquity while stating a reading that antiquity did not hold. Artemidorus would have asked what the dreamer does for a living before saying anything at all. The Talmudic tradition would have offered a verse and told the dreamer that the interpretation determines the outcome.
It is unfalsifiable in practice. Calm water means peace, rough water means turmoil, deep water means the unconscious, shallow water means superficiality. Any dream water can be fitted to any emotional state after the fact, which is a property of the method rather than a discovery about dreams.
What can be said honestly is narrower and more useful. Water is among the more commonly reported dream contents in the content-analysis literature, which documents frequency and not meaning. Several named traditions have read it, and their readings differ. Jung's association of water with the unconscious is influential, coherent, and his. Where a modern reader finds a water dream meaningful, that meaning is being made by the dreamer in the present, which Artemidorus and the rabbis would both, for different reasons, have recognised as how the business actually works.
