A movement entry records an organized current of renewal, emphasis or reform within, or alongside, an established religious tradition, something narrower than a whole new religion and looser than a formal denomination, though history shows a movement can eventually harden into either. The atlas records eight, spanning centuries and continents: the medieval Spiritual Franciscans' push for strict Franciscan poverty, the nineteenth century Holiness Movement's pursuit of entire sanctification, the Pentecostal era's own Charismatic Movement and Word of Faith teaching, twentieth century Liberation Theology, the Ecumenical Movement's pursuit of Christian unity, the doctrinally guarded Fundamentalist Movement, and the broad, independently founded African Initiated Churches.
Eileen Barker's scholarly introduction to new religious movements, grounded in her own direct fieldwork rather than secondhand description, gives a working method an entry can borrow even for a movement inside an established tradition rather than a wholly new one: a movement arises for documented, traceable reasons, often around a specific renewal impulse, a charismatic leader, or a contested doctrinal question, and its own account of its founding is worth recording separately from an outside scholar's documented, cross checked history of the same events.
An entry therefore records a movement's documented origin, its central emphasis, and how it relates to the wider tradition it emerged from or alongside, distinguishing the movement's own telling from independent scholarly record wherever the two might diverge.
