What a Philosophical School Entry Covers

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

A philosophical school entry records a named, organized tradition of philosophical thought, Stoicism, Nyaya or Neo-Confucianism among them, considered for its core positions, its founding figures and its documented historical development, distinct from a single philosopher's own individual body of work in being a continuing tradition later thinkers explicitly identified themselves as working within. The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, a peer reviewed reference maintained and regularly revised by specialists in each entry's own subfield, treats each school this way, as a documented, developing tradition rather than a fixed, timeless position.

An entry records a school's founding figure and period, its core claims stated in plain terms, and how later thinkers within the tradition revised, defended or split from those original claims, since very few philosophical schools held one single, unchanging position across their entire documented history.

Where a school's relationship to a religious tradition is itself debated by scholars, some schools were adopted by a religious tradition, others held at arm's length or actively opposed, the entry records that documented relationship honestly rather than assuming every philosophical school and every religious tradition it touched agreed on how they fit together.
