What a Textual Witness Entry Covers

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

A textual witness entry records a specific, physical manuscript, codex or inscribed text that preserves, wholly or in part, an important religious document, recorded for its own documented material history, its date, its place of origin and its condition, distinct from the text it preserves, which the atlas records under its own separate entry. Bruce Metzger's commentary on the Greek New Testament shows how much careful, documented comparison between individual witnesses is required before scholars can even describe what a text most likely originally said.

An entry records a witness's documented date and place of production, established through paleography, material analysis or an explicit colophon where one survives, its present physical condition and location, and what portion of its underlying text it actually preserves, since very few ancient witnesses survive complete.

Where a witness's readings differ from other surviving witnesses of the same underlying text, an entry records that documented variation honestly as part of the witness's own value to scholarship, rather than treating any single witness as automatically definitive. Where a witness is fragmentary, an entry says plainly how much of the underlying text actually survives in it, rather than describing the witness as though it were complete.
