An artifact entry records a physical object, whether it survives today, is lost, or is known only from documentary and archaeological trace, that a tradition holds to carry particular religious significance beyond its plain physical form. A cup, a shroud, a sword, a fragment of bone or cloth: none of these becomes an artifact in this sense simply by being old or by surviving intact. It becomes one because a living or historical tradition has attached a specific claim to it, that it touched a founder, witnessed an event, or carries a power its own material does not explain on its own.
An entry records where an object is currently held or was last known to be, what a tradition claims about its origin and history, and, kept separate from that claim, what physical, documentary or scientific evidence exists to test it. Those two layers, the traditional account and the independent evidence, are recorded side by side rather than merged into a single summary, since a tradition's own account of an object's history remains a fact worth preserving even where later testing complicates or contradicts it.
Many artifacts recorded here are genuinely disputed, their authenticity actively argued over by believers, skeptics and specialists in more than one field at once, and an entry states that dispute plainly rather than quietly settling it. Where a scholarly or forensic verdict exists, the entry records it as one more documented fact about the object's history, not as the atlas's own final word on what the object truly is.
